Shadow Minister calls for Diversity and Investment in UK Tech Industry

Seema Malhotra MP, Labour’s Shadow Home Office Minister, has welcomed the call for recognition of Asian entrepreneurs in Britain’s growing technology sector. Launching Diversity UK’s “Top 100 Asian Stars in UK Tech 2015” in Central London at an event hosted by KPMG, Ms Malhotra said,

“Britain has a booming tech industry right now, and the contribution of Asian innovators to this rapid growth is to be celebrated. 18.7% of people working in startups are from an ethnic minority background. This sends a great message about the relationship between the UK, India and other Asian nations and the partnerships that are possible as we grow the jobs of the future.”

The booming UK technology industry is predicted to worth £4bn to the UK economy this year and the app sector alone worth £30bn by 2025. Ms Malhotra, who helped lead the creation of the Labour Digital group, also highlighted the importance of public policy support for entrepreneurship.

“Labour have consistently supported entrepreneurship in Britain, led the way on Small Business Saturday and have pushed the Government to go further. The last Labour government took steps to tackle barriers to enterprise and entrepreneurship, and women in enterprise. It is crucial that the UK continues to invest in this technology markets and give its support to tech incubators and hubs in London and the regions which drive innovation.”
