Seema Malhotra MP Criticises to Tory Cuts to Student Maintenance

Seema Malhotra, MP for Feltham & Heston, has reacted to George Osborne’s budget today. Ms Malhotra said,
“This Budget leaves working people worse off, and fails the test of building a more productive economy to bring the deficit down. A family in Feltham and Heston with one earner on average earnings and 2 children will lose over £2000 in tax credits next year. More families will struggle to make ends meet and it will also hit the local economy hard. Women are also being hit twice as hard as men.”

Ms Malhotra focussed on the scrapping of student maintenance grants, which would make it far more difficult for young people from poorer backgrounds getting to university,

“The cutting of the maintenance grants for students will have an adverse impact on local young people. At the start of the last Parliament the Tories cut the Education Maintenance Allowance. They trebled tuition fees which we campaigned to cut. This goes one step further and will see university education increasingly become a preserve of the rich.”

“There are some welcome moves including Labour’s call for reforms to non-dom tax rules and support for savers. But overall this budget will punish the poorest.”
