“Our big task is winning the country’s confidence back on the economy. We will be reaching out to engage the views of the Parliamentary Labour Party and the wider party and I will be working with John McDonnell in that task. Those who aspire to a better life for themselves and their families need a Labour Government that is guided by the principles of fairness and that’s what we will work to achieve.”

“This is a devastating announcement and shows that the Tories failed to tell the truth at the time of the election about their intentions. The need for police in our communities is more, not less than before and is why Labour pledged to increase them. We will fight this in Parliament tooth and nail.”

The vote on the Hunting Act that was due to take place today has now been withdrawn by the Government in the face of opposition by Labour, the SNP and even some Conservative MPs. While I am happy that the threat to the Hunting Act has subsided for now, I am disappointed that the Government backed out when it knew defeat was inevitable, and I strongly believe they should have gone through with the vote, even if they would have lost.

Seema Malhotra, MP for Feltham & Heston, has reacted to George Osborne’s budget today. Ms Malhotra said,
“This Budget leaves working people worse off, and fails the test of building a more productive economy to bring the deficit down. A family in Feltham and Heston with one earner on average earnings and 2 children will lose over £2000 in tax credits next year. More families will struggle to make ends meet and it will also hit the local economy hard. Women are also being hit twice as hard as men.”

Reacting to the CPS figures on conviction numbers for violence against women Seema Malhotra, Labour’s Shadow Minister for Preventing Violence Against Women, said,

“Today’s CPS statistics show a step in the right direction, but there is clearly much more to do to give victims the confidence to come forward and that they will be believed. Whilst conviction numbers overall are up, it is disappointing that convictions on rape and domestic abuse have fallen as a percentage of prosecutions. And with over 400 defendants under 18 years old, it is shocking that the Government is still refusing to introduce compulsory relationship and sex education in schools.”
